Round 2
Round 2
Eagles vs Saints
April 4th 2009
Langley
Sunny dry conditions
After many weeks of below average temperatures the Eagles hierarchy got together to plan a game of football that would be played in sunny conditions. What they came up with was to schedule a game far enough away from Vancouver that it would not be affected by its awful weather.
The game was set for Langley and what a beautiful day it was. Sunny sky, a calm breeze and lots of footy fans with expectations of a great game ahead.
1st Quarter
The top of the table Saints came out firing after their big win last week. Still in fine form they kicked truly 3 times in the quarter to post a reasonable score kicking into the wind.
The Eagles were slow out of the blocks after many players were still asleep on the sidelines after receiving the first real massage therapy treatment that BC Footy has seen. The saints centre line was winning plenty of the ball and the Eagles had a hard time containing them. Thanks to some skillful play and direct defense the Eagles came out on top this quarter kicking 4 goals.
At the quarter time break Coach Bell got stuck into the players. Accused of being lazy and a bit big-headed Belly called on the Eagles veterans to lead the way. We could not afford to play so loose on our skillful opponents.

2nd Quarter
The second quarter was like a different game. The Eagles changed gears in this quarter and started to play to their potential. With strict tasks and plays to guide the team masterminded by Coach Bell the Eagles really showed their professional side kicking seven unanswered goals. The half back line of Frewen, Tickets, and Robin were working hard. Robin had a job to shut-down elusive forward Chip and he did this better than it had been done before. Frewen was unstoppable and repeatedly directed the ball to the faster smaller Eagles around him. In the Centre Mike Wennagel was in unbelievable form. His cardiovascular endurance makes him impossible to stop and his ability to find the ball was 2nd to none. Tills at Full forward was relishing his reward for a best on ground performance and Coach Bell stressed that all Best on Ground players will find themselves at full forward the next week. Tilley didn’t disappoint kicking 6 sausage rolls and taking the ball lace out to many times.
1/2 time EAGLES 11.3.69 Saints 3.0.18
3rd Quarter
The lens shutter kept clicking and Peter Cristoforo was always looking for it. He did his best efforts in the 3rd as we kicked towards the digital camera end. He was great in front of the lens and his efforts and poses can be seen in the multimedia section of the website. The Eagles continued to dominate lead by Dane Bergman. Laying hard hits and long passes he set up numerous attacking raids. Special mention in this quarter to all our Canadian players. Their efforts were sensational. Again Matt Pilchek was strong on the wing and he really knows how to find the ball. Gary Barone was once again putting his sizeable frame into many hard hitting contests. Jimmy took on a big job playing on one of the Saints most threatening Australian forwards and he did it with grit and toughness as only he knows how to do. It was great to see him putting his muscle into the contest. The veterans of Taylor and Hilton really led the way. Standout goal from Hilton 45m out on the boundary line, a real team lifter. Previous record goal from Hilts was about 15m out, but if you ask Hilton he will say it was 20m.
3/4 time EAGLES 13.7.85 Saints 3.0.18
4th Quarter
With guys getting tired it was left up to fresh legs to keep the run going. Bangers was effortless in his pursuit of the ball. Steve G was also very solid in his contests. Showing their defensive games Jason and Scott were solid when the ball happened to get down their end of the field.
With the afternoon sun getting lower in the sky the Boys continued to push hard to the end. Spurred on by Chris Freemans 50th game the goals kept coming. Hoping to show they can go the distance should the game require it the Eagles pushed all the way to the final siren to run out victors by 99 points.
